The role of AI and digitalization in the workplace
The World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an initiative of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and has existed since 2003. Goal: to raise awareness about the prevention of workplace accidents and occupational diseases among employers, employees, and policymakers.
The 2025 edition focuses on technology. More specifically, it is about the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and digitalization in safe and healthy working. This focus was not chosen by chance. Digital technologies have rapidly become a permanent part of our working environment, from the factory floor to the home office.
New risks in a digital context
AI, robots, and sensors are increasingly taking over dangerous, heavy, or repetitive tasks from humans. Think of handling chemical substances, working under extreme temperatures, or the early detection of risks through smart monitoring systems. This contributes to prevention and the reduction of physical strain.
On the other hand, working with these forms of digitalization also brings new types of risks. Without clear frameworks and thoughtful policies, technologies can lead to:
- Work intensification due to constant digital availability
- Ergonomic complaints caused by static screen work or poorly designed interfaces
- Loss of autonomy when algorithms determine the work pace or order
- Blurring boundaries between work and private life, especially with hybrid working
The challenge is therefore twofold: to make use of technology where possible, but also to critically assess the impact on the person behind the screen or the machine.
AI and digitalization are transforming safety and health at work
On Monday, 28 April 2025, the ILO is organizing a free webinar from 13:30 to 15:00 on live.ilo.org. During this session, international experts will share insights on how AI and digital tools are being used worldwide for safe and healthy work—from the construction sector to healthcare.
Revolutionizing health and safety
The ILO has also published a report presenting concrete examples and detailed analyses. This report highlights, among other things:
- Task automation and the changing role of OSH professionals
- Real-time monitoring via sensors and wearables
- Algorithmic work management, including ethical dilemmas
- XR technologies (such as AR, VR, and MR) for training, instruction, and risk analysis
